Methamphetamine

Methamphetamine is a stimulant that speeds up the body’s system. It is available as a prescription medicine as Desoxyn, typically prescribed to treat obesity and ADHD. It comes in powder form and also a pill. Crystal meth, which is an illegally altered version of the prescription drug cooked with over-the-counter drugs in “meth labs,” resembles glass fragments.

Street names for the drug include meth, speed, ice, shards, chalk, crystal, crank and shabu. The prescription drug is typically in pill form. Crystal meth is usually found as a powdery substance or the more typical glass fragment looking substance. Crystal meth is smoked, snorted or injected. The prescription form of methamphetamine is taken by pill or crushed and snorted.

Methamphetamine, which is highly addictive, affects the body in the following ways:

  • Agitation, increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Increased respiration and body temperature
  • Anxiety, paranoia
  • High doses can cause convulsions, cardiovascular collapse, stroke or death
